CHESTERVILLE
Kent County
Joined Queen Anne’s County Homemakers May, 2001
In the late 1930’s, Anna Davidson, Elva Dwyer, Mary Everett, Jessie Jarrel, Eva Jarvic, Mary Messick, Pauline Skinner and Lois Vansant met for the purpose of forming the Chesterville Homemakers Club. The name was chosen because all of the members lived in or around the hamlet of Chesterville.
The ladies made community service their main priority by volunteering at various community happenings. It was, and still is, not unusual to see Chesterville Homemakers at fire company dinners, church get-togethers, Lion Club fundraisers, and the like. They donate their time as servers, their products as bakers and cooks, and whatever else is needed in each situation. They volunteer at nursing homes. They provide gifts and well wishes at nursing homes and mental health facilities at holiday time. Chesterville Homemakers have been 4-H leaders, Fair Board members as well as fair workers since the beginning of the club.
The club has always met in various homes participating in diverse projects such as fun contests, crafts and making ABC quilts and afghans. The club has taken trips to farm museums, the 911 center, the sheriff’s department, Winterthur, as well as other museums and to an azalea garden.
A highlight of each year is the annual Christmas party where they learn who has been their “secret pal” or “club sister” for the preceding year. At the party, names are drawn to learn who will be their “secret pal” or “club sister” for the coming year.
The club has adopted needy families with school children in the area, giving them birthday presents and Christmas presents. The club has also donated school supplies to Millington Elementary School for any children who need them.
All in all, the Chesterville Homemakers put community above self and enjoy doing it!
(Queen Anne’s County Council of Homemakers invited the Chesterville Homemakers to join the county, as Kent County no longer has a county homemaker’s organization.)
