TEMPLEVILLE
The first organizational meeting of the Templeville Homemakers Club was held in 1968 at the home of Miss Esthel Hall’s; and in January 1969 the meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Peg Snyder, who was elected as the first president. The members were as follows: Mary Knotts, Esthel Hall, Katie Stafford, Viola Robinson, Lida Kinnamon, Anna Richard, June Faulkner, Clara Bell Shelton, Pearl Ware, Hanna Anderson, Ila Knotts, and Betty Richard. The meetings were held at different member’s homes in the evening.
Members added later in years: Helen Johnson, Madeline Wooleyhan, M. Gladys Truitt, Bernice Coleman, Louise Wooleyhan, Alice Birch, Frances McGinnis, Margaret Robinson, Anita Anderson, Virginia Woolyhan, Georgeann Lilly, Minnie Hauck, Jeanette Eveland, Charlotte Pickering and Dottie Grier. Since 2006, the club has gained a new member, April Blades. Unfortunately, four wonderful members have passed away, Jeanette Eveland, Ila Knotts, Frances McGinnis, and M. Gladys Truitt. They are sadly missed. Two members, Helen Johnson and Betty Richard have served as Queen Anne’s County Homemakers president; Charlotte Pickering has served as treasurer. Mrs. Pickering was the recipient of the Recognition Award in 2010. The extension office has been of great help to the club; thanks so much to Sara Kidd, Dian Councill, Ingrid Holmes and Jean Austin.
Meetings are now held at noon and accompanied by a light lunch: a game such as bingo is played. I June the club treats itself to lunch at a local restaurant. Thanksgiving and Christmas are celebrated with each member bringing a covered dish: gifts are exchanged at the Christmas party.
The Templeville Homemakers have made donations to various causes over the years, including Sudlersville Elementary School, Holly Center, Shore State Hospital, Relay for Life, Toys for Tots, boxes for boys and local food banks to name a few. Recently, the club donated backpacks with school supplies to local school children. Just this year our club did Back Packs for School children. Members volunteer, helping with cleaning and serving church dinners. The club has served dinners at 50th anniversary parties, dinners following funeral services and lunches at auction sales. Members sew quilts or make afghans for babies in need as well. Club members assist at the Queen Anne’s County Fair, helping with the dinners as well as other duties. Some members judge for the Home Arts and the 4-H contests and serve as hostesses at the exhibit during the fair. Some members also volunteered at the 2009 Chicken Festival.
Templeville Homemakers also make items for Hospice patients, nursing residents and others in need including gift baskets with 7 one-a-day wrapped gifts. Although the club is busy serving the community, members still find the time to read books, take trips and enjoy the fellowship of each other.
